JOEY EVANS

From Para to Dakar

Joey had a dream to race his motorbike in the Dakar Rally. A race widely known as the longest, toughest and most dangerous off-road race in the world, that has claimed the lives of 70 people over its 39 year history. His dream, along with his life as he knew it, was shattered in 2007, when during a local race in South Africa he was hit by another biker and amongst other serious injuries he broke his back, crushing his spinal cord leaving him completely paralyzed from just below his chest. The injury was diagnosed as a T8-T9 incomplete spinal cord injury with about a 10% chance to walk again. Joey still determined to chase his Dakar dream, used it to fuel his motivation to recover.

It took him nearly 10 years, with many more challenges, successes and lessons learnt along the way, until on the 2nd of January 2017, Joey stood as a competitor on the start of the Dakar Rally in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Qualifying to race the Dakar Rally was an incredible achievement in itself but the unbelievable events that followed during those next 9000km across South America tested him beyond what he could have ever imagined. An unfore- seen and catastrophic twist in the plot created a final chapter you simply couldn’t make up!

Joni Peddie, CEO of the business: ‘ Resilience People’ will share pragmatic ways on how to do this, even during periods of high speaking demand, and excessive travel.

LAURA VAN DER MERWE

Laura is a professional stalker.

She has a passion for working with and developing people, and has obtained an Honours degree in Psychology, as well as a Coaching qualification through UCT Graduate School of Business. A member of Toastmasters, and the JHB Chapter of the Professional Speakers Association, Laura speaks on communication, relationships and bridging the gap between generations (particularly in the workplace).

She hopes to become the leading expert on communication matters, helping people in relationships of every kind to bridge the gaps, find their common ground, and move forward along a path of mutual understanding. Ultimately aiming to make the world a happier place, one word at a time.

MADELEINE BLACK

“UNBROKEN”

The sharing of her story publicly on The Forgiveness Project’s website in September 2014, opened many doors for Madeleine in ways she never imagined, and the invitations started to pour in.

Many women and men got in contact and explained how reading her story gave them strength, hope, and a different perspective of what’s possible in their lives.

The founder of The Forgiveness Project, Marina often refers to the various people on her website as “story healers” rather than “storytellers” and now she completely understood why.

She has taken part in both TV and radio interviews and has been invited to share her story of being gang raped as a teenager at conferences, book events, schools etc.

She recognises that she was a victim of a crime that left her silent for many years but has now found her voice and intends to use it. Not just for her, but for so many who can’t find theirs yet.

In March 2018 she won the Amazing Strength award at the No. 1 Magazine Amazing Women Awards and in October of the same year was asked to be the Patron for Say Women, a Scottish organisation which offers safe accommodation and support to young women who are survivors of sexual abuse/rape and who are homeless.

As well as being an “accidental speaker” she continues to work as a psychotherapist in Glasgow

Her memoir, Unbroken, was published on April 4th 2017.

ROB CASKIE

For an exceptional experience join us for the 2019 PSASA Annual Convention when Rob Caskie, Storyteller extraordinaire, keynote speaker, cultural guide and author will have you enthralled with a “Friday evening Fireside Chat” on the pre-conference evening.

Storytelling may seem like an old-fashioned tool today – and it is. That’s exactly what makes it so powerful. Who would ever have imagined that sharing experiences about solo African motorcycle journeys at university would lead to a career in storytelling?

Rob began sharing stories professionally in 2000, honing a unique talent for storytelling on the Anglo Zulu War battlefields. Bringing the drama of battlefields to life led to international speaking engagements. His subject matter has expanded considerably, always essentially human stories. There is a powerful thread of human interconnectedness (Ubuntu) directed at the better angels in our natures, which resonates so powerfully with audiences today.

With stick and trademark shorts, Rob prides himself in positive, unique storytelling that does not rely on electronic or visual aids ‘when the lights trip, Rob does not’.

For an up-close and personal first hand experience of Rob’s talent and entertainment, be sure to book your space around the fireside.
