Western Cape Chapter Meeting – 11 February 2019

Monday 11th February 2019‎‎‏‏‎ ‎

‏‏‎ ‎ - 21:00 SAST/GMT+2

Dear PSASA members and friends,

One of the first lessons I learned as a speaker was “Facts tell and stories sell!”

In February we’re learning all about story with UK speaker and author Deborah Henley. We’ll also be hearing from our fantastic Associate members in the Speaker Factor Contest as they share their stories in a bid to represent the Western Cape in the national semi-finals.

This is a meeting not to be missed – I look forward to seeing you there!

Lois Strachan – Cape Chapter President.

The Power of Your Story

The secrets of using story to engage and inspire

Deborah Henley

Do you ever lead group talks, give presentations or stand up at the front of the room to speak? What makes the difference between a session that captures everyone’s energy, engagement and imagination versus those that fall flat? What makes some speakers set fire to their audience’s imagination, moving them to action, while others peter out before they’ve even ignited so much as a spark?

The secret is in sharing your own story. This enables you to connect – human to human – and to build trust and loyalty in others so that you can inspire and motivate them. When you share your story, you share who you are in a way to which others can relate and resonate. It also enables them to understand what motivates you and why this matters to you. As a result, people are more likely to work with you, be moved by your cause and generally want to interact with you.

In this lively session full of stories and anecdotes (naturally!), Deborah Henley will reveal:

the power of story and the neuroscience behind it;
how to find your key message and story;
the Seven Cs of influential storytelling and when and how to use them;
the three kinds of personal stories and those which you must avoid!
how to find pivotal moments;
how you can develop your storytelling ‘muscle’ day to day.
This session will give you confidence to use your stories when presenting, pitching and speaking from stage. Whether within the workplace or other contexts, you will know when and how to use them to tap into their power to influence and inspire.

Deborah Henley helps leaders do magic stuff with their story, from connecting and building trust to inspiring and motivating clients and colleagues.
A facilitator, trainer and speaker based in London but with strong connections and affinity for South Africa, Deborah has worked with thousands of groups in global blue chips around the world, including Accenture, Amex, Pfizer, Microsoft and Barclays.

A qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and NLP trainer with NLP Psychotherapy Masters, NLP Executive Coaching and many other qualifications, Deborah worked for eight years in the field of addiction recovery and trauma, developing Expressive Therapy – which combined the arts of self-expression with insight into subconscious patterns and beliefs, helping people make profound change. This with the guidance of her mentor, the late David Grove, who himself originated Metaphor Therapy and Clean Language. Deborah then joined corporate life (most people seem to do it the other way!) to head up client Relationship Development at EY, devising and delivering a number of programmes, events and speaker-led seminars.

The Speaker Factor

It’s competition time at PSASA and our Associate members will have just 5 minutes to demonstrate their skills as they vie for a chance to represent us at the National Convention Speaker factor in Gauteng

I’m going to be utterly selfish and keep the MC role for myself this month… and one lucky attendee will get the traditional MC’s bar of chocolate. So, even if you’re not tempted by what our speakers have to share, you’ll have another reason to join us.
