andrew-horton-inspirational-speakers_24748_imageAndrew Horton, was a panelist at the recent PSASA Mid-term Convention focusing on monetising your intellectual property. Andrew has succeeded in building a successful business beyond the platform. He is the speaker in the spotlight at the PSASA this month. We ask him a few questions about his speaking career.

What or who inspired you to start speaking?

Since my early twenty’s, I wanted to be involved in adult education, but could not see a financially viable option, where I could do this successfully. Between 1992 and 2012 I used to buy and sell businesses. As I was enjoying success with my equipping my own sales teams with the skills they needed to succeed. In around 2006 I was approached by a few friends and associates and asked if I could support their teams. As I was looking for an exit strategy I decided to give it a try.

What are your topics?

  • Unleash all the Entrepreneurs in your business
  • Transform and begin to Perform

Passionate, knowledgeable and edu-taining

10 Years

When did you first join the PSASA?
About 6 – 7 years ago

What was the greatest piece of advice you have been given that has contributed to your success as a speaker?

  • Speak as often as you can for free. There is no substitute for time on your feet in front of an audience.
  • Join your local chamber of commerce and offer to speak for them as often as possible.
  • This gives you exposure to prospective clients and gives you time on your feet
  • Invest into your personal development in the form of coaches, watch other speakers, read books, listen to audio books and become the go to expert in your field.

Who is the best speaker you have ever seen, and why?
Brad Sugars. He is easy to listen to, knows his subject, is relevant and kept his audience engaged throughout his presentation.

What was your greatest ever talk/presentation? And why?

I spoke to a group of kids from Soweto TV. They really got my message and I saw remarkable positive changes in their lives. As a result of this, I was asked to create a TV series on Soweto TV called Empower Half Hour to further spread the word of inspiration.

What was your biggest on stage disaster and what did you do about it?

I was speaking at a toastmaster’s event near the airport, when the whole stage collapsed where I was standing. I continued speaking and walked off the stage without missing a word. I wish I had remembered to say it was only a stage I was going through, but I never thought of it at the time.

What is your #1 marketing tip?

Become the go-to expert in your field and promise plenty, but always deliver way-way more. When you create an unforgettable customer experience, your customers become raving fans, who will utilize you again and again and they will also refer you to other customers.

What has been the best thing about being part of the PSASA?
From the first day I joined the PSASA, I have been astounded by the generosity and giving spirit within the organization. I want to specifically thank Stef Du Plessis for the time he invested into me when I first joined and for the example he has been to both me and my business ever since.

What do you know now, that you wish you knew when you first started?
Stop believing that you can speak on any subject. Develop your own niche and become the industry leader in that field.
