This is the last issue of 2012. May you have a good holiday and come back in 2013 feeling refreshed and ready to go. This month’s newsletter contains very interesting articles and we trust as the editorial team that you will enjoy reading it.

Presidents Corner – December 2012

Here we are again in the Speakers “Quiet” month as traditionally things are quiet for most speakers and trainers from 10 December to 15 January annually. But is it really a Quiet time for us – I believe we all need to take a complete break and spend some time with the family and friends – at least 14 days a year and then because we are AAA personalities always wanting to be doing something we need to use the balance of our enforced “Quiet Time” to getting those things done that we just did not get around to in the year.
WOW is the best way I can explain the experience Jacques and I had when we attended CAMP NSA in Phoenix last month as your representatives. Thank you so much for affording us the opportunity to do so. We met and made many new friends who are all giving back their time, effort and energy to keeping the Spirit of Cavett alive and increasing unselfishly to making the “Pie” bigger and better for us all worldwide. It was just incredible for us to see how keen the Chapter Officers were to give of their time etc. to growing the Chapters in the NSA -USA and CAPS. Would their businesses suffer in the year of office – yes – but the benefits of serving outweigh the benefits of giving back.
We see some of this spirit here in the PSASA from time to time and Jacques and I have committed to igniting the flame and seriously start developing and building on the Spirit Of PSASA, so that we too may increase the Professional Speakers and Trainers Profile here in Southern Africa.
We have so many Professional Speaking and Training Colleagues who are not yet part of the PSASA and we need to be creating a space where all Professional Speakers and Trainers want to belong to and share their skills and knowledge with each other so that we can all learn and prosper. But we cannot do this alone and for it to work we need you all to embrace the spirit of giving and sharing rather than taking and playing the WIIFM club card. Just 3 days ago a Professional Member told me that she was not going to renew membership because she was not getting any benefit or business from being a member of the PSASA – But had she been to all the Monthly meetings and conventions – No- Had she participated or chaired any SIG (Special Interest Groups) to further her knowledge on speaking and business skills – No and so the list continues.
The PSASA is not a Speakers Bureau or Agency – it is not here to bring you more business and find you GIG’s. It is here to help you become more proficient at your craft and business and to share your knowledge and skills with your colleagues and pay it forward unconditionally – When we start living by these values then we start reaping the rewards for making the time to attend meetings, become better speakers and trainers, mentoring others, and build better businesses and a community.
So my message to you as we come to the end of 2012 is to take some deserved time off and then spend some time re-evaluating where you want to be this time next year and what you need to do to achieve that dream. We have the privilege of working in an industry where we make a difference in other peoples live – it is a great responsibility and we owe it to them and ourselves to be the best we can be all the time.
May this year-end break give you an opportunity to share yourself with your friends and family and may you take some time to dream about the year ahead and come back refreshed and ready to do what needs doing.
To those of you who celebrate the festive season – have fun and many blessings to you all – to those who don’t I wish you all you wish yourselves.

Jacques De Villiers achieves Highest Toastmaster Recognition

I am pleased to advise that Jacques had completed all the requirements for his Toastmasters DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster) Qualification.
This is the highest recognition that can be given to a Toastmaster and is the culmination of a whole batch of Speeches and Project Management and Leadership requirement –It takes a minimum 4 years to complete this qualification and is regarded as being equal to a MBL. In the USA he would have been given a Salary Increase of $1,000 by most corporates – that’s how highly regarded this is in the USA.
Well done Jacques and you now join the merry band of PSASA members who are also active Toastmasters as are hundreds of top Professional Speakers in the USA (e.g. Patricia Fripp CSP CPAE, Joel Weldon CSP CPAE etc.)

Story Secrets for Speakers #3: Demonstrate your magic

Once you have painted a picture of the possibility (Story Secret #1) and you have overcome the first block to your message, personal resistance, by calling on the hero’s character (Story Secret #2), it is time to let the audience know why they should trust you.
Who are you that I should take you seriously? What makes you the expert?
Because if you can overcome their resistance then you can get them to act on what you say.
Why does Cinderella do what the Fairy God Mother told her to do? Why does Frodo leave the beloved Shire and go on a journey to Mordor, and possibly death?
The only reason why Frodo set out on a journey to the land of Mordor was because Gandalf told him to do so. And because the Fairy Godmother told Cinderella to go to the ball she did.
But how did Gandalf get Frodo to trust him? And the Fairy Godmother Cinderella?
By demonstrating their magic.
Yes, it helps to rattle off an impressive CV and it helps to list your credentials, but this is not half as powerful as turning pumpkins into carriages. What they think is, mice are really white horses and what they think is an ugly old dress need to become a beautiful evening gown. What if an old ring your uncle played with, suddenly becomes the most powerful object in the world.
Before their eyes ordinary things turn into something out of this world. Not by itself. Through you, demonstrating your magic.
Demonstrating your magic means that YOU let your audience see ordinary things in a whole new light. And with all magic it is simpler than you think.
Here are three of the most used ways in which speakers help the audience trust them by revealing their magic…

  1. By demonstrating their expertise – reason
  2. By sharing personal experience – action
  3. By relating to the audience’s experience – heart

Whichever one of these techniques you choose, the aim is always the same: to help your audience overcome doubts and reservations so they will believe again.
Let’s take these techniques one by one to show what I mean:

  1. 1.         Reason through demonstrating expertise

How many times have you heard a speaker say something like: The Harvard School of business has proved that 93% of a certain group of people do something a certain way, but in fact it is the 7% that is left that are successful?  Then the speaker reveal the logic behind this; giving facts, statistics and logical argument until, like that 7% the audience also sees the light.
If they buy the reasoning, they buy your magic.

  1. 2.         Share your personal experience – Action

The typical story here says: “In nineteen-hundred-and-something, I faced this or that challenge. But today I stand here having overcome… these are the simple things I did… the actions I took…  to make it work.
In your story you were the Yahoo and by trial and error you saw the light and now you can share your insights–your magic–with the audience. Your audience believes you, because you are living proof.

  1. 3.         Relating to the audience – Heart

This technique goes like this: “You know how you sometimes do xyz only to discover abc?” or “Have you ever found when you do d then e happens right after?”
By citing typical behaviour and experience common to all human beings, you show how the audience themselves intuitively know that these are the steps to take in spite of the doubts and questions they may have. You can do this with great humour as you typify universal experiences and poke fun at people’s common reactions.
Again you show yourself to be the one to trust because you know them and you can even clarify their own muddled experience and make sense of it.
I find this latter technique the most powerful of all three, especially in a participative training and facilitation space where you can ask the question directly to your audience and create a safe environment for them to air doubts and reservations. If you can allow your audience to have doubts and accept that their doubts are okay. If you can understand and allow for their questions, you reveal your heart and the strength of your own conviction.
Ironically, talking about doubt often builds the most trust.
In C. S. Lewis’s ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe’ the lion and mentor Aslan tells Peter that he will be a king. Peter says that Aslan must be mistaken, that he could not possibly be a king. That Aslan does not know how much of a coward he is. That Aslan does not really understand him at all.
While they are talking an enemy wolf attacks Peter’s sisters, Lucy and Susan. Peter rushes to defend them and then come face to face with a wolf he has lost against before, acting like a coward. His friends want to help him, but Aslan holds them back saying “This is Peter’s fight”.
Peter fight the wolf and kill him, overcoming his own doubt in Aslan’s words.
Aslan allowed him to have his doubts and express them freely. And then, through action, Peter proved that Aslan did in fact know him truly – magically – and knew he was no coward at all.
Of course, Aslan does not send Peter into the battle without a sword.
It is the nature and power of the weapon you provide for your audience that is the focus of Story Secret #4.

Mastermind Groups

Whilst the PSASA has formal structures in place to get its members together, there is another world where the PSASA has morphed into something else.
There are a whole bunch of members who have taken the wonderful opportunity that the PSASA has given them to connect – in the form of mastermind groups.
These folks have taken the initiative to get together and help each other become stronger by helping each other:
–            Develop the craft of speaking
–            Get more business
–            Become better marketers
–            And, lots more
So, take the initiative and form your own mastermind group so that you can become more successful in this crazy and amazing world of professional speaking.

How to Survive Those Silly Season Socials
Many people may think that professional speakers always know what to say and how to say it – no matter what the occasion – and that we are never uncomfortable or tongue-tied. But that’s a little like assuming that doctors never get sick, or mechanics never have car trouble! The fact that we are professional speakers is no guarantee that we may never find ourselves in a situation where we just can’t think of anything appropriate to say. Year-end functions with clients, friends and spouses can be fraught with the possibility of Foot-In-Mouth disease, Cat-Got-Your-Tongue-itis and This-Person-Is-So-Boring-I’m-Rapidly-Losing-The-Will-To-Live Syndrome.
Even professional speakers need to learn the Art of Conversation in order to always have something interesting, witty or amusing to say to anyone, in any situation.
Here are a few pertinent party pointers:

  • Have a positive attitude – view the party as an opportunity to meet someone new and interesting.
  • Add something to the event – don’t wait for other people to run around you – offer to help the host, offer to get someone a drink or go with them to the buffet table, or invite someone standing alone into your conversation.
  • Plan a few conversation starters in your head, and use them if necessary – but make them sound natural and unplanned.
  • Make a good first impression – dress to give yourself confidence, smile when you enter the room, and use positive body language (even if you feel nervous!)
  • Be an interesting person – widen your general knowledge, listen to what people are saying in the media, and keep an open mind on debatable topics.
  • Be a cool conversationalist – don’t gossip or belittle others and don’t monopolise the conversation. Listen attentively to learn new things about the people you are talking to.
  • Be aware of what you say, and how you say it – adapt your conversation to the people you are speaking to, to make them feel at ease. Modulate the volume of your voice to suit the conversation, environment and occasion.

Ten Useful iPad Apps

Computer tablets have changed the way we work as speakers/trainers. No longer do I have to keep stacks of books next to my bed. I can even access my e-mails and read the latest news without getting out of bed. Although I can do many things with my iPad, it does not replace my laptop. If you need a computer to do a lot of writing and other typically computer things, use a net book or laptop. If you are looking for emailing, web surfing, movie watching, reading etc., the iPad is perfect.
I have listed ten iPad applications that I found most useful to me as a speaker/trainer:

  1. Power Presenter ($1.99)

This app is used for presentations. If you save the MS PowerPoint as PDF file, it will help you do the presentation on projector. It will automatically detect the projector and send the signal to the projector using the VGA cable.
It will actually mirror the screen to the projector using software. Therefore, you can not only see the presentation on the iPad screen but also on the projector. No need to turn your head back all the time as in Keynote. You can now also draw, highlight text on the slides and send your drawing to email. It also contains a blackboard and web content presenter so you can write your formula on a whiteboard or blackboard, show video clips using a single app. It is great tool for education.

  1. Analytics HD ($6.99)

This is the premier app for Google Analytics, Analytics App, and is available on the iPad as Analytics HD! See charts and reports like you’ve never seen them before, and share them in a meeting with full screen charts!
Analytics HD brings all your important stats in a simple and efficient interface, faster and easier than checking Google Analytics from your browser!

  1. Priority Matrix ($4.99)

Priority Matrix is an incredibly convenient and powerful “to do list” tool that uses proven time management methods. You can visually and intuitively manage to do items, lists, ideas, project, plans, and activities.
Priority Matrix helps you overcome information overload… When you have many responsibilities, it can be very challenging to know where to spend your time and effort.
Priority Matrix is an insanely easy to use tool to help you balance work and life. It helps you focus on your priorities through the “4-quadrant method”, a natural way to categorize your tasks and ideas.

  1. Dropbox (Free)

Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. Any file you save to your Dropbox is accessible from all your computers, iPhone, iPad and even the Dropbox website!
I use Dropbox to share extra information with my delegates, instead of trying to download it to memory sticks at the end of a presentation.

  1. iMeetingPad ($2.99)

iMeetingPad replaces the standard notepad you used to bring to meetings before the iPad era dawned. This app helps you with your sketching with basic drawing tools and a collection of clip-art images to drop in. Unlike your old paper pad, iMeetingPad offers unlimited pages in unlimited separate documents (meetings). Also unlike your old system, you can edit your doodles, shapes, images and text at any time, move, size, rotate them or change their colour with ease. Easily swipe through your pages of notes and enjoy Apple’s standard but sexy page turn graphics, or just jump to any page instantly, with a touch.
And iMeetingPad supports your projector, letting you send your notes and graphics out to a projector or TV connected using Apple’s video adapter cable (not included). Draw on your iPad while your colleagues watch in awe and envy on the big screen.
iMeetingPad also lets you save your notes to a PDF file and email them directly from within the app. Any text typed into the pad is also extracted from the PDF and included in the body of your email, making it easy to paste into your desktop applications or search for in your email system. Of course you can just delete all that from the email, and spend the meeting writing totally unrelated emails… we won’t tell.

  1. Pocket (Free)

When you find something on the web that you want to view later, put it in Pocket. It automatically syncs to your phone, tablet, or computer so you can view it any time, even without an internet connection.
Use Pocket when you discover an interesting article, video or web page, but don’t have time to go through it. Once it’s in Pocket, it’s on your phone, tablet, or computer. You can read an article during a flight, see a web page while you wait in line, or watch a video while relaxing at home.

  1. Zite (Free)

Zite is an intelligent magazine that helps you discover interesting things to read.

You have never experienced a task manager like this!
Simple. Attractive. Useful. …Now also named “one of the 100 best apps ever made for iOS” by Tap! magazine.
30/30 helps you get stuff done!
You set up a list of tasks, and a length of time for each of them. When you start the timer, it will tell you when to move on to the next task.
That’s it!
The task list is controlled entirely with gestures; a simple and natural way to use the app.

  1. Pinterest (Free)

Social network Pinterest is one of the very few to challenge the big guns in the industry. It provides a means to find and share inspiration, working as a place to collect and organise the things you love. The iPad app has an elegant interface that pushes inspirational imagery to the fore, just as it should.
Pinterest is where you can dream about, plan, and prepare for the things you want to do in your life. Whether it’s vacation plans, new gadgets, favourite recipes, fashion or the latest home decor, Pinterest is an easy way for you to make the most of it. Quickly and easily save and organize your inspirations with your iPhone or iPad.

Stop Being Bitter and Make 2013 BETTER

There is massive power in words. The words we speak and consistently think are slowly moulding our future, one simple word and phrase at a time. In a literal sense what we think about, speak about and act upon, we bring about. If your thoughts, words and actions are moulding the way your future will unfold, are you standing guard at the door of your mind and consciously shifting your thoughts and words in a positive direction. Take control of your future right now and choose your words and thoughts very carefully.
Stop Being BITTER and Get BETTER
There is one letter difference, between the word BITTER and the word BETTER. Thinking BITTER thoughts robs you of your personal power, whilst consistently focusing on, using BETTER words, thinking BETTER thoughts and taking BETTER daily action, puts control squarely in your hands. When you choose to be BETTER you empower yourself to make the necessary positive changes in your life to, consistently expand who you are. Remember you attract success by the person you become. As you become more, you consistently attract more. Choose to be BETTER and everything will gradually become BETTER.
Mould Your Future
Do you believe that reality is something out there over which you have no control? Or do you believe that you can create your own reality minute by minute? When you choose the latter and you take responsibility for your life; you then have the power to create your future one moment at a time. This allows you to gradually mould and build your future one positive action at a time.
You can continue to be BITTER over what has happened to you in the past or you can make the wiser choice today and you can choose to be BETTER every day. Both choices are simple to make. As easy as it is to continue to be bitter, so easy is it to commit to be better. The results you will get to enjoy in your future though are very different. When you make the wiser choice to be better, you will bring far more meaning and fulfilment into your experience.
Accept Responsibility
Take responsibility for the direction your life is going. It is time to wrestle back control of your words, thoughts and actions, from the hand of fate and for you to begin to begin creating the exact future you desire. Stop allowing your life to continue to just unravel, one misused moment at a time. Accept full responsibility for everything in your life, make that one decision to transform your thinking and become the direct creator of your circumstances. Until you do this you remain a creature of your unsatisfying circumstances, with no ability to change anything.
Accept “RESPONS- ABILITY” for everything that happens, or has happened in your life or business. This will empower your with the “ABILITY” to “RESPOND” to challenges or opportunities, allowing you to change anything in your life or business, until you bring things in line with your expectations.  If you don’t like anything, or if you want to exploit any opportunities, you are in the driver’s seat, able to either exploit opportunities or mitigate challenges.
When you accept 100 % RESPONSIBILITY for everything in your life and I mean everything. You free yourself, so that you have the ABILITY to positively RESPOND to every EVENT, (challenge or opportunity), which you may face in the most appropriate and positive fashion. Event + Our Response = The Outcome. E + R = O.
Choose Your Responses Wisely
You cannot change interest rates, the state of the economy or the President, so why worry about these. You can however choose how you respond to everything, which is going on in your environment. So if the environment in which you operate is not ideal don’t curse it, work with it and find the many golden opportunities, which abound in this abundant universe. Yes you may have to search a little harder and look a little longer, in tough economic times, but there are always opportunities available, no matter how bad things may appear.
Accept 100 % Responsibility
Take complete responsibility for your life and future right now. Accept that your road to success will be filled with both challenges and opportunities. Wrestle each one with expediency, believe in yourself and your abilities, begin taking consistent daily inspired action and you will get to create the future exactly the way you want it.

Taking your eye off the road

The holiday season is upon us. You will most probably take your family on a well-deserved holiday. One of the main causes for most accidents is lack of concentration or taking our eye of the ball / road / task at hand. Often, this is only for a few seconds. That’s all that’s needed to ‘lose control’ of a vehicle, fall or trip when we don’t look to see where we’re going, losing our balance or footing and falling from a height, losing our grip and dropping something. The list is virtually endless. You can choose any verb you like and it can be linked to some kind of incident, because it is all about human action.
When we do something which involves a degree of risk, even if it is as mundane as walking or driving, we have to pay attention and stay 100% alert, all the time.
There are many reasons why we get distracted, but one of the most prevalent ones is fatigue.
Especially when concentrating for longer periods of time, we do get tired and often really exhausted. This is made worse if the task at hand is familiar, repetitive, or boring and the working environment hot, humid or uncomfortable. In addition to fatigue, there are a host of other factors which cause us to lose focus, which means our minds wander. We could be daydreaming or thinking about the home, family, girlfriend, car, something which happened yesterday, last month, or some need we have.
Drive safely this holiday season. We want to see you in action next year again.
