1. NSASA AGM 1st August 2006
AGM August 1st 2006 Hackle Brooke Estate
What a refreshing, non typical meeting! Some AGM’s just seem to be more creative and constructive than others. Our Chairperson and President, Paul du Toit, managed the meeting like clockwork which was attended by our Immediate Past President and Founder, Stef du Plessis, the Presidents of our Durban and Cape Town Chapters, (Roger Knowles and Ronnie Muhl) and a new record of 33 members!
To make our meeting even more meaningful, our Treasurer, Dr Graeme Codrington, inspired us with his talk on how to Increase Your Speaking Income. Paul du Toit presented members with greetings and congratulations from abroad - a real ‘portfolio of evidence’ in terms of international interest in our organisation, our IFFPS membership and our upcoming National Convention in Sandton, planned for April 2007.
Welcome to our new President, Billy Selekane! With typical flair, he introduced his theme for the year of his presidency: ‘Speaking: From Passion to Profit’ with 4 sub-themes: Expertise, Eloquence, Enterprise and Elevation. These topics are carefully selected to help you build your business in an organised, structured manner and to understand the performance criteria for being an excellent speaker. Enough reason for our members to attend all our planned meetings - without exception.
It is with pride and gratitude that we acknowledge the outstanding contribution of our outgoing (immediate past president) Paul du Toit, who served as President for a marathon 14 months. We got to know Paul as a highly organised, structured leader who can act decisively and efficiently. He is a time-keeper of note with a knack for protocol and organisational issues. Our highly successful first National Conference was testimony to his meticulous care and his amazing level of commitment and responsibility.
During the past year, under Paul du Toit's inspiring leadership, NSASA became an affiliated member of the IFFPS, NSASA built a credible international profile, and membership increased with 32 from 87 to 119! Thank you for leaving behind a legacy of effectiveness, dedication and flair!
2. NSASA Matters
NSASA now boasts 119 Members consisting of 47 Professional, 30 Associate, 32 Candidate, 5 Supplier and 5 Staff members.
One of the most exciting developments of the past year, was the emergence of the new New Botswana Chapter, with Lets Sithole as Chapter President. Billy Selekane visited the Botswana chapter as deputy president during June to inspire and inform 8 interested potential chapter members about our dynamic organisation.
Report Back - NSA Convention 22-25 July 2006, Orlando, Florida, USA.
Paul du Toit reported: The NSA Convention in Orlando, attended by 2000 delegates from 14 countries, ended with the prestigious Awards Banquet where 5 CPAE's and one Cavett Award Winner are honoured annually - the most sought after accolades in the biggest and oldest speaker association in the world - NSA. It was an incredible moment to see an ageing Charlie "Tremendous" Jones hobble up to the stage to receive the Cavett award marking a lifetime of achievement and contribution to the speaking business. It was also a great moment when Paul Bridle was recognised for his incredible ongoing work and commitment to the IFFPS by being awarded the Ambassadors Award - an award that is not necessarily made every year. Well done to Paul - I'm glad to say that we were one of the member nations that cast our ballot for him!
Our incoming NSASA President, Billy Selekane made a last-minute, surprise appearance and sat in with me at the IFFPS Council session on Saturday 21 July. The Convention was slick and well run, the keynotes of an exceptional standard, and the workshops I attended were excellent. I also received some great ideas on how to stream a longer convention making sure that we have enough time to network with one another.
There has been a great deal of excitement, praise and encouragement from around the world for NSASA and the strides we have made in building our association. Good news for us is that there is great interest amongst Americans in visiting our country and I have already received commitments from Lenora Billings-Harris (NSA President) Scott Friedman, Jana Stansfield, Fred Gleeck, Monica Wofford, Jared Braud and many others who have committed to be in South Africa for our 2nd National Convention in Sandton from 20-22 April, and others wishing to attend future conventions.
Thank you Paul, for updating us on international events.

4. Local Speakers Recently
Johannesburg Chapter
On 17 May 2006 Thomas Overbeck shared with the Johannesburg Chapter some important aspects of ‘Growing your business within the greater Conference Industry in SA’ - addressing those haggling issues so many speakers grapple with.
On 7 June, Paul du Toit delivered a highly informative talk on “How to Run Successful Public Seminars” attended by 37 people. For each low-tech speaker, this was mind-boggling, in a very positive way!
1 July 2006 Jacques de Villiers offered a Saturday morning intensive workshop: “Take your Speaking Business to the Next Level”, which 16 people attended. Even those of us who consider ourselves as technologically challenged, benefited enormously from his presentation.
On the evening of 12 July Alan Heyl shared with us his fascinating talk on: “Dare to dream the Impossible” which 45 people attended.
On 14 August 2006 Dr Ray Laferla shared with speakers a highly motivating and deeply spiritual talk on the skills and mindsets to ‘Overcoming Psychological Barriers that limit your success in Speaking’.
Cape Town Chapter
During the Cape Town Chapter Meeting on 16 May 2006, Toney Finley very successfully addressed “The Four Ingredients of Successful Coaching”.
Durban Chapter

8. Tip of the month
For those of you who did not receive the letter, this is what Beveley Garside wrote: ‘I have just made two wonderful investments and I thought that I would share these with you to enhance your business.
Frank Furness showed us his card scanner and I have found a local supplier and am thrilled with its performance. It is more than just a card scanner and has many uses. There is more than one model and I suggest you look first at the top of the range.
The other investment was in a pen scanner – scan as you read and download onto your PC – edit and ….well it is a great aid in writing speeches. Fantastic.
You can get hold of Mike Janet of Digital Integrated Technologies at 011 4540573, or email him at mjanet@ditsa.co.za. His service is great. Please tell him that I sent you.’
9. Thought for the Month
In the light of Dr Ray Laferla’s talk on ‘Overcoming Psychological Barriers that limit your success in Speaking’ Michael Hammer’s remark is of interest: “Removing limits on what people can achieve can be a perverse invitation to burnout. It’s exhilarating to be stretched to your limit, but after a while you need a break before you break.”
And Candace E. Pert (medical doctor), wrote in her book: ‘Molecules of Emotion (1997): “We must take responsibility for the way we feel. The notion that others or circumstances can make us feel good or bad is untrue. Consciously or – more frequently - unconsciously, we are choosing how we feel at every single moment. The external world is in so many ways a mirror of our beliefs and expectations. Why we feel like we feel, is the result of the symphony and harmony of our own molecules of emotion that affect every aspect of our physiology, producing blissful good health or miserable disease.”
As this edition of our newsletter is probably the last one of which I will be the editor, I would like to thank all our members for contributions, constructive feedback and support during the past year. It was an honour to be entrusted with the responsibility of our newsletter and to write in the shadow of great speakers.
