Dear Bronwyn,
1. IFFPS Global Speakers Summit 2007
The IFFPS has indicated to us that the next Global Speakers Summit is likely to be 2 years after the inaugural event (which was 31 March to 2 April 2005). The NSASA bid for South Africa to host the 2007 Global Speakers Summit has officially begun. On Wednesday 6 July, after our "first Tuesday of every month committee meeting" we will be sending our proposal to Paul Bridle, President of the IFFPS. Just over three weeks ago we asked for Expressions of Interest from nine top South African Event Organisers - we received 5 Expressions of Interest followed by four proposals a fortnight later. All were invited to present to us on Tuesday 28 June. The presentations were of a high standard and the committee was put in the difficult position of choosing between four excellent companies.
After deliberation, the Board unanimously chose Ice Solutions headed by Tracey Whittle to partner with us in our bid. We will update you with more news as it becomes available.
2. Recent NSASA Events
Ron Arden 8 June 2005
Ron Arden, the world's most admired speakers' coach, became the 2nd person (Nigel Risner was the first) to be invited back to present to NSASA - specifically on the subject of the Nine Silences. We were also privileged to hear our own National Public Speaking champion, Douglas Kruger, deliver his 7 minute prize-winning talk to kick the evening off - which was very well received. Ron made sure that our enthusiastic applause didn't go to the young man's head, providing some constructive feedback before launching into his address to us.
Comments afterwards confirmed that it was an enormously valuable session - thank you Ron! Ron departed on 24 June for San Diego for six months, and we look forward to having him back with us in South Africa next year.
We also thank Ernest du Toit and his team at the Avroy Shlain auditorium in Midrand for the use of their excellent facility for the past two months.
3. NSASA Matters - Changing of the Guard
Hanlie Joubert, our administrator, continues to do a superb job ensuring that things happen and that all the loose ends get tied up. Hanlie can be contacted during office hours on 011 787 0829 if you have any queries that our website can't answer for you ( www.nsasouthafrica.co.za).
Sonja Stander is now in place as bookkeeper of the NSASA. She will report to the Treasurer and take her place at forthcoming committee meetings.
Michael Jackson has resigned as 2nd Deputy President, and from the NSASA Board. Michael continues to be a valued NSASA member, and I'm sure you will join the Board in thanking him for being part of getting things off the ground for the past year. Michael was responsible for the important task of membership verification from the start, and encouraged a number of members to be part of the NSASA.
Billy Selekane was unanimously elected 2nd Deputy President at our last committee meeting on 7 June - congratulations Billy!
Our President, Stef du Plessis stands down as President effective 1 July 2005 after founding the Association and making the initial joint loan with Clive Simpkins of R12,000 that got NSASA off the ground. Stef has steered the Association into a situation of profitability, been instrumental in getting our administrator on board while providing free office space and support for her, has invited a number of top-flight speakers to address us, invested huge volumes of his time in ensuring that the Association survived its first year in operation, and was rewarded with the NSASA being accepted as a candidate member of the IFFPS on 31 March 2005. As a result, many of us have made a whole lot of new friends, learned volumes about becoming better speakers and a whole lot more. The NSASA owes its existence to Stef's vision. As Immediate Past President, Stef automatically enjoys a seat on the board, when it suits him to attend meetings. If you wish to personally thank Stef, mailto:stef@stefduplessis.co.za . The NSASA Board, on behalf of all its members applaud a truly great leader and visionary. Stef's contribution to the South African professional speaking industry will be remembered for many generations to come.
As a result of the changing of the guard, Deputy President, Paul du Toit now becomes President, and Billy Selekane, after a short stint as 2nd Deputy, has moved to Deputy President. The election of a 2nd Deputy President and a Treasurer will take place at one of our next committee meetings.
Our website is up to date and contains all updated event information - go to http://www.nsasouthafrica.co.za. Please contact Hanlie if you would like to post your articles.
4. Upcoming meetings [Event info will be updated on the website by 12h00 Mon 4 July 2005]
Please contact Bronwyn mailto:info@nsasouthafrica.co.za to reserve your seat.
4.1 Saturday 16 July - Janine Lazarus - Media Presentation Skills
Times: Full morning from 08h30 to 13h00.
Janine is a former 702 presenter, and specialises in Media Presentation Skills, or, in other words, how to prepare yourself to handle the media.
The programme starts with an hour-long broad media overview entitled: 'Understanding The Media Mind' which includes a valuable insight into how the media works, the nature of news, as well as media expectations. The rest of the workshop will be devoted to Presentation Skills/On-Camera Training. Before going 'live,' Janine looks at the basics behind breathing and relaxation tools, body language, non-verbal skills and ad-libbing techniques, and tips on how to prepare targeted messages for print, radio and television audiences. Delegates will be placed in a variety of 'live' interview simulations, with a news cameraman on hand to film each scenario. The 'hands-on' on-camera training component will be followed by extensive critiques. This method of inter-active coaching provides delegates with the opportunity to see how they look, and hear how they come across before venturing into a radio or television studio.
Inner circle: R1,000 per head - only six places (Professional members R800)
Outer Circle: R500 per head - maximum ten places (Professional members R400)
Once again, we are providing you with an outstanding quality workshop at a substantial discount to what you would receive in the marketplace.
15% will go towards NSASA coffers. Seats are allocated on a first paid first served basis.
