Gary grew up in Johannesburg and Cape Town, studying at Wits University on a scholarship and played for Wits for 2 years
· He then joined Manchester United in 1977 and less than a year later became their number one goalkeeper, playing 373 competitive matches, playing in 2 European semi finals and winning 2 FA cup medals.
· During that time, he completed a BSc in Physics in Manchester.
· He played for England from 1978 to 1986 and was part of the 1986 world cup squad that made the quarter finals in Mexico.
· During the 86 world cup, Gary seriously injured his knee and retired from top class football at the comparitively young age of 28.
· He returned to South Africa to play for Kaizer Chiefs for 2 years during which time the team won 5 trophies.
· After a final retirement, Gary turned his attention to the media and became the anchor soccer presenter at Supersport, covering the 1990, 94, 98 and 2002 world cups.
· He has been one of Southern Africa’s top speakers for the last 12 years
· He has also completed an MBA from Henley in Oxford.
· He was one of the ambassadors for South Africa’s 2006 soccer world cup bid, travelling around Asia and Europe with Danny Jordaan, and being present at the final announcement in Zurich.
